Piano Lesson: Practicing Tips For The Performer

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Can your practice to become a better performer? What then can be practiced? Let us see what you can do to feel at ease when someone asks you to play the piano!

How to practice performing

In order to learn to play the piano in front of an audience it is a good thing to practice the different aspects of making a successful piano performance. A piano performance consists of playing a piece of music in a musical way without mistakes, and if mistakes occur to minimize the effects of these mistakes. It also concists of meeting an audience and enjoying the experience of seeing real people looking at you and hearing you play.

1. A musical performance. In order to perform a piece of piano music in a musical way it is a good thing to practice this way in the initial steps of the learning process. Probably you will need to practice a difficult piano piece step by step. Let all these musical passages be played and repeated the same musical way you want them to be performed once you have mastered the piano piece.

2. Avoiding mistakes. Of course you want to play the music you practice without mistakes when you will end up playing in front of an audience. I strongly urge you to play the passages of the musical piece you practice with much concentration, focusing on small segments of the piece at a time and very slowly at first avoiding to make mistakes. The more mistakes you make as you practice a piece of music, the more mistakes you tend to make as you perform.

3. Minimize the effects of a mistake. In order to feel confident once you are on stage you need to know that you can handle a mistake. This makes for another way of practicing that is aimed at making you prepared to perform. This way of practicing consists of playing a piece of music from beginning to end as you would perform it in front of an audience. This could be a good way to end a practice session as you play throught the passages you have mastered.

4. Practice performing. In order to minimize stage fright and feeling inadequate when it comes to the actual performance in front of an audience you can do much to simulate the various aspects of a piano performance. If you know how to handle the steps of a performance beforehand you can better concentrate on making a musical performance.

If you do not want to involve too many people you can anyway practice the art of performing in the comfort of your own home. You might as well enter the room where you are going to play your piano the way you would enter a stage in front of an audience thinking about your facial expressions and your relaxation. Practice the way you will react seeing the people, hearing the applauses and cheerings. Learn to relax, smile, bow in front of the public and sit down at the piano and then concentrate completely on giving the audience a great musical experience.

As you start to play the piece of music, try to focus entirely on creating great music. If you make a mistake, try to keep up the tempo and play on with no facial expression revealing the mistake and enforcing the effects of it. You could play for an audience consisting of one person, a teddy bear or some sort of recording equipment to create an inspiring and a challenging environment. As you have completed your performance you can practice meeting the audience, smiling, bowing, showing gratitude for their reactions and finally leave the room in a appropriate manner.

The important thing with these exercises is that you can simulate the actual situation of playing in front of real people and have a feeling that you know how to react to the challenge of meeting real people.

Can someone who plays the xylophone be good at the piano if they practiced?

Friday, September 11th, 2009

I play the xylophone, and every piece I have learned I can play on my brother’s piano.
Is it possible for me to play the piano? I know all the notes and I taught myself how to play my xylophone pieces on it. I do not have any private lessons since my xylophone is for my school band classes.
Actually I meant is it possible for me to play piano sheet music? Or just any song like Love Song, by Sara Bareilles?

Piano Lesson: It Is Easy To Compose Piano Sheet Music

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Why is it easy to compose piano music?

Because you have to start from where you are. This should be fairly easy; Otherwise you have not started from where you are.

A suggestion is to start writing piano pieces for beginners in a progressive order. The idea is that as the pieces get more complicated for the player they will also become more complicated for you to notate and compose and you will subsequently learn as you write.

How is composing beneficial for your piano playing?

1. Your compositional endeavours will make you more and more aware of intrinsic musical subtleties in the music of other composers. When you start to think and feel like a composer you will also become a better performer as well. Performing is also a creative process similar to composing.

2. When you compose you will become a better sight reader.

I remember an assignment I had many years ago when I wrote the music to a musical. It made me aware of many notational problems I had not taken the time to solve for myself before.

When I started to play my piano music again I was astonished when realizing it was much easier for me to sight read complicated piano sheet music. The reason for this I concluded was my concentrated effort to notate my own piano music.

The process to play something with my fingers and and then try to notate the music on manuscript paper was so to speak a reversed sight reading exercise.

What about manuscript paper?

You can use a notation program or you can write on paper or use both approaches. I suggest that you start writing on paper the way that composers have done for centuries.

Composing piano sheet music by hand on manuscript paper is a cheap and effective exercise to learn the various sheet music symbols.

Very often I jot down musical ideas on ordinary white paper after drawing five lines by hand. It works fine if you can’t find your manuscript paper. You can buy manuscript paper for sheet music or print out your favorite format for free on the site http://www.blanksheetmusic.net

In conclusion, composing piano sheet music can become a natural part of your daily practice routine.

Spend half an hour a day composing your own piano sheet music and you will increase your musical knowledge and become an even better musician!

And remember; Composing piano sheet music is fun!

Piano Tabs: Learn To Play Fur Elise

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

In this piano lesson you will learn to read easy keyboard tablature. Piano tab notation is easy to read even if you do not know how to read sheet music. You will also learn to play an easy piano version of Fur Elise.

To know how to read and play piano sheet music is a great asset. It is worth developing this skill as you have a nearly unlimited amount of piano sheet music titles to play.

When you try to learn piano sheet music I suggest that you take time to learn just a few notes at a time. Learn the placement of the notes on the sheet music staff and also where to play them on your piano.

Meanwhile you can learn to read the easier piano tab notation.

Piano tabs or keyboard tablature is an easy way to learn melodies and other types of piano music. We will use a common way to describe how you are to play the keys on your piano.

Sheet music notation shows the notes to play but not how to play them on your instrument. Tablature on the other hand shows the keys to play on your piano.

To read the piano tabs you have to learn the note names of the white keys on your piano. First we will take a look at the note c at the middle of the piano keyboard. It is called middle c or sometimes c4.

The black keys on the keyboard are organized in groups consisting of two or three black keys. Middle c is immediately to the left of two black keys at the middle of the keyboard.

As we mentioned before middle c is sometimes called c4 as it is in the fourth octave of a piano or a grand. Octave means eight and you have played eight notes if you start with c and play the white keys until you come to the next c.

The following notes to the right of c is d e f g a b and then you have the next c. This c is subsequently called c5 as it is in the fifth octave of a piano. On a smaller type of keyboard with fewer keys you will still use c4 to show middle c.

The c note to the left of middle c is called c3. All notes to the left of two black keys are c notes in different octaves.

The easy piano tabs we will use to play Fur Elise has the following rules:

1. The white keys are indicated with lowercase letters. An example: c d e f g a b

2. The black keys are shown by uppercase letters. For example, A D-major chord is written d F a. The uppercase letter F shows that the note is the black key to the right of f.

3. The octave to play is showed with a number after the letter. The note c4 means, play middle c. The following notes will not have a number until it is time to change octave. Here is a C-major arpeggio: c4 e g c5

It is time to play the first notes of Fur Elise. It is written as an easy melody for your right hand:

e5 D e D e b4 d5 c a4 c e a b e G b c5

e4 e5 D e D e b4 d5 c a4 c e a b e c5 b4 a

I suggest that you memorize the melody one line at a time. Now we will come to a new part of the melody. If it had been a pop song it would be called the bridge:

b c5 d e g4 f5 e d f4 e5 d c e4 d5 c b4

We finish by playing the first part again:

e5 D e D e b4 d5 c a4 c e a b e G b c5

e4 e5 D e D e b4 d5 c a4 c e a b e c5 b4 a

This is a simplified version of the first part of Fur Elise with an easy form of the most common piano tabs on the Internet. You can learn more about piano tab notation on Wikipedia. Search for keyboard tablature. These piano tabs are an introduction to the little more advanced tablature system on the Internet.

The Piano Bench Can Add Magic to Piano Music

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

So, what’s the big deal with piano benches? Who would like to invest in expensive furniture like this just to make them feel as if they are already some sort of Bach or Mozart or Beethoven or Rick Wakeman or Jon Lord of Deep Purple? Why, Mr. Lord doesn’t even use a piano bench when he’s out there playing with the rest of the Deep Purple gang. Well, Elton John is sitting on a piano bench. How about Jerry Lee Lewis? Don’t give him any benches or he’ll set it on fire together with the piano itself while playing “Great Balls of Fire”. So, what’s the big deal with a piano bench?

You can use any kind of bench if you want while banging away your hands on the keys. If you’re a rock and roll monster, you don’t need one. If you’re like those classical masters, you might be is it worth it?

You see, for the many piano players, investing on different appropriate gadgets or furniture or instrument can inspire one self to play more with dramatic feelings, so to say. Piano benches make up what good artist an individual can be. That is why there are lots of sites that offer an assortment of beautifully-made piano benches for the home, church, school and concert halls and even rock and roll stages. They come in hundreds and hundreds of different designs, styles, options and colors like Walnut, Mahogany, Satin Black, Polished Black and you can even request for a custom-made bench built just for you with your own specifications.

There are even some that are “electrical” or “mechanical” piano benches but don’t worry. Nobody’s going to electrocute you if your play sounds sloppy all over. There are benches that come with adjustable settings and there’s for a single player and there’s something for the lovely duo.

Playing the piano or playing music in general is not to be taken lightly by serious musicians, young and old alike, hobbyists or professional and even students and teachers. For other instruments, you just can sit anywhere just like the guitar or a harmonica, put it in your lap or in your mouth and play wherever you do. Let’s see you carry your grand piano anywhere while walking.

In today’s modern music, you might say that the piano is shadowed by the guitar and a lot of modern bands have 3 guitars and one piano or no piano at all. But when the piano starts playing in some background, the music played can be filled with magic in the air and even with mystic and fantasy.

There are many heavy metal bands in the 80’s or even in the 70’s that seldom use pianos but today’s Goth metal music has made a nice space for keyboard players and put piano back in the limelight as well as the use of piano benches.

Anyway, that’s the way it is with pianos. Pianos are made for grandeur, elegance and class and the right piano bench can be a nice addition to your collection. With great accessories and music furniture comes great music in a broader sense. And it’s true, the right and elegant piano bench can add magic and mystery to piano-based music.
